AH YEAH BOI!!!

Posted on August 29, 2013

I've been fortunate enough to have seen some serious bands play some seminal gigs and tonight was one of them nights… (although I was trying to swerve it all day) As I walked into the main hall of the Ritz the show commenced…

Public Enemy just strolled into my top-ten-gigs-of-all-time-bestest-gigs… simple really… u have some serious players, two iconic figures of hip-hop and a bouncing-Manchester…

Flava Flav went round the balcony and did his stuff from within the people… as inclusive as it gets he kept the show ticking over, just right…

Chuck D has a way with words and words that show a way thru history, politics and philosophy and his delivery is worthy of his status as a grand master…

They talked of hip-hop being in Manchester for decades and the last time I saw a hip-hop gig was actually at the Ritz back in 1988… promoted by johnny j and featuring MC Buzz B… Prince cCool… Owen D and C-Chill on the desk…

Tonight brought me full-circle back to some of my musical roots and for personal reasons it will resonate with me for time… peak experiences like these go beyond marks-out-of-ten… being 'in the moment' is where it's @…

Over T’Hills…

He stands there like a monument to miss-spent youth and new found glory… Richárd Gárryseine, Parisian existentialist philosopher who together with L.Millét, the taciturn theologian have formed The Shawe of Wythe School of Hard Knocks and Soft Shocks. (more of this another time)…

So then, we miss the early train to the City of Steel but that's no probs as time is on our side today. The man in the red uniform says we can't smoke on an open platform, giving us a disapproving slow shake of the head like he's got the authority of, well, a man in a red uniform. He's the fat controller and he knows his script…

Anyways… rather than sitting by the window and watching the lush Lancashire scenery turn into the lush Yorkshire scenery (nature doesn't recognise borders) we sit between carriages and start a talk that lasts all day and never once gets boring…

The last time I was here was to pick up some fine speakers ten years ago when I spent a month-or-so on one, mixing and matching loads of amps and speakers to get just the right sound stage that would do justice to TUNES!!! the time before that was ten years earlier when we went on the Happy Mondays/ MC Buzz B surreal tour, this place has good memories…

We sit in a nice square, it's sunny, there all kinds of goddesses walking around in the lush sunshiny day… we eat fine On-The-Go SoulFood… chorizo, ementhal, tomato and corriander tiger bread sammiches with a few slices of AVOCADO!!! and a cool mocha-choco-frapé-narco-coffee!!! fuelled-up and right on it!!!

A walk up the hill and into another fine square that has an EDL march, just 50 or so of them looking slightly out-numbered by the hundreds of Rainbow Tribe Folk. I suggest to a police officer that they undergo DNA testing as some of them look 'a bit foreign' and why don't they defend England by joining the army or somefink!!!

Anyways… onwards up the hill to The Green Room to meet brother Ian who's got a fine exhibition of his rock-and-roll fotos. It's an understatement to say that they're a significant document of some seminal bands at some serious gigs. I think the fotos speak for themselves and more than I could ever describe…

We have good chats about creativity and detachment from the art we create. We Listen to some decent electro-acoustic tunes and just enjoy each others company, then we chat with Duncan, a lad from Glasga who's made this place his home. He's taking fotos of the people and then I get to shoot the shooter…

A couple of guys do some electro-acoustic stuff that's alright, decent chops and voices. Richárd doesn't like his guitars to sound like guitars but I think he's warming to this. Now he's living the dream in Chorton-cum-Cumquat he'll be hanging out with his yoghurt-weaving friends playing the nose flute whilst juggling olives…

Me and Monsieur Avocado were gonna head off back to the Not-So-Rainy City but decide to float downhill and join a circle of knitters for an hour of chats about stitches in time…

We don't need a map, we aren't lost as we know where we're goin'. So we just go with the flow and the flow takes us to Valerie, a hot French chick with tasty delights on offer, so we partake of her joyous hospitality. Mocha-choca-caramel-narco heaven, with a chunk of tart of the maple and pecan variety. I'm sure that man CAN live on cake, coffee and ciggs alone…

Back down the hill again we find the Leadmill, home to that Mondays gig I went to a couple of decades ago and one of the last remaining old school indie clubs that is steeped in history. Manc doesn't have any of these now. The Boardwalk, Haç and Venue are all flats. TInternational 1 is a Turkish supermarket (I've been in since, standing in my spot, between the olives and humous)…

Ian is interviewed by the lad from Shed 7 who seems to be wearing the same clothes he wore all those years ago, he's not aged. Ian describes some of the scenes in his own way. This is good as it frames the images and gives insights into his living art…

The Complete Stone Roses are playing. Now I spoke with Adge last year and said that I wasn't going to Heaton Park as the past had passed. The same with the Meadows film last week but tonight it was like all of those clubs I'd travelled the country to see them in. I tried me best to not be overly pedantic about the equipment used (I mean, the single coils of a Strat thru black-faced Fender Twin Reverbs cut thru the mix more than a Les Paul thru Marshalls)… overall though it was great stuff… shame we had to get the train back but we'd done our bit and not let ourselves down…

On the train reflecting on a really-really great day day actually. Monsieur Avocado is going back to his loft in Chorlton, waiting for Unicorn to open so's he can get some £17 olives. I go back to Bass Low Towers for 3 hours of deep chats with The Reverend!!!

instead of talking about the ART we become distracted by issues that are not ART… but seeing as though these issues can impact on people in significant ways, let's get on with it…

there's a few broader points that I'll use to try to illustrate my point… around the time of Stone Roses debut there were a couple of musicians who were going about their ART recording tunes in a little Two-up-two-down in Salford (Giant Haystack's old house as it happens)… MC Buzz B and Carl Adesile recorded a tune called 'Never Change' that used a sample of a Bruce Hornsby song… some lawyers got involved and the credits went 100% with Bruce's people…

as an aside…
He wasn't that worried about the use of the sample per se, it's just that at the time samplers weren't sophisticated enough to deal with 'time-stretching' so the pitch of his voice went up so sounded 'squeaky'… Bruce even flew over to meet Shorn and there were no artistic issues in the end…

the whole debate about intellectual rights was kicking off… it's a shame the same didn't happen in the 1960′s when bands like the Stones were taking/borrowing/appropriating blues riffs from dirt-poor artists…

I recorded a song called 'Nutopian National Anthem (part 2)' based on the Lennon song… now I borrowed pre-recorded silence from other artists albums and mixed them all into a new song… I'd love to see the lawyers fight over that…

anyways, a little jump forward and I was in Carl's studio in Ducie House and met a fine poet called Lemn Sissay… I told him that I'd sampled him speaking his fine words on a tune I did… and, although I'd not written the words, I'd messed around with them and edited them into another piece… I said I'd give him 50% of what I'd made, so I went into my pocket and brought out my (empty) hand, which he generously took and shook…

bounce forward a few years more to meeting a lovely man who has given us so many seminal pieces of art… I'd take his fotos, crop them (taking out his watermark) and mess around with them, creating new pieces… the man is generous enough to share credit (even though I'm not altogether sure if he thinks I'm 'butchering his fine work!!!)…

I took a foto of another artist and messed around with it so much that he wasn't 100% sure it was his … I still gave the 50-50 credit…

I've only been pulled up once in my 35 years of creating art… a lass had taken a quote from a famous person and made word-art from it… I took this and messed around with it, she was livid, even though I'd pointed out that the words weren't hers… so I destroyed all my part in the art and it exists no more… no problem, if u don't like what I do I'll work with people who do… In hindsight I shouldn't have compromised but hey-ho…

I did a collaboration with Miss Yoko Ono on her Liverpool Ladders… my painted up ladders were highlighted on the Late Show Review (for a whole 3 seconds!!!) no one asked me or payed me or owt… no problem from me…

this whole saga is frankly a bit of a waste of time (except this piece will go into my 'notes' and 'geo in word' page so is part of my arts…)

if I sample Jimi Hendrix is some lawyer gonna tell me I'm not allowed to? if I use a Beatles riff that they borrowed from some old blues dog, who am I gonna pay? if I take one of Ian Tilton's superb shots, bounce it around my phone and send it into the web-o-sphere will he just recognise me as another artistic soul-bro?!?!?

I'm just the artist, I just do what I've always done… been inspired to create me arts… that my simple 'reason for being'…

so back to business… here's the deal… 50-50 has always been an equal and fair sum to me…

btw… what's 50% of fuck all?

Giving it up…

sleepover…

like a continuous, back-to-back, on the bounce… 24/7 and 365… the toughest time not seeing the first rays of the rising sunshiney day…

Faith…

having faith that it's still there behind the cloud… feeling alright with the time just right now… in this instance things could be worse…

my friends…

all of u that are troubled by the night… and lost yer way… can't see it straight… can't find a way thru??? like when yer here with me alone… I'm right there with u

values…

dont undervalue what u are and overvalue what u aren't… forget about yesterday… it's just today where u make the differences.

lose and gain…

gaining and losing in life… in truth, don't search for success… attract it by the person you become…

what u waiting for? go…

Go for it right now. The future owes u nothing… u have to make it happen… why not? and just, what if?… changing the 'but' to 'and'…

Never-never, never-never, never-never, never… never give up…

any moment, you have a choice that is easy or difficult, that either leads you closer to your true self or further away from you… keep going…

finding yer way…

where there's no way, imagine one… when there's no time just make some…
★ⓕⓞⓛⓛⓞⓦ★═╬► your heart with a passion…

experience…

… bad experiences of the past… just let them go… u are beautiful…. trust yerself to open yer heart, feel that u can be true to yerself…

this is all I give…

to give of myself…
all soul and spirit, now…
make the deepest connection…
and… positive reflections to warm a smile… travel though years, no double-fears… embrace those tears… mile after mile after mile…

where I belong with we…
trust we free ourselves to be…
knowing how to be, inside so easy…

love why we are…

feel so real… we see…
now here revealed thru Love and Light…
